Two Workers Die in a Warehouse Fire in Phnom Penh

The blaze on Jan. 29 destroyed the building and also spread to three nearby homes



PHNOM PENH—Two persons died when a fire erupted in a warehouse in Phnom Penh’s Tuol Svay Prey 1 Commune in Boeng Keng Kang District, the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department of Phnom Penh reported on Jan. 29.



According to the department’s report, two workers who were in the warehouse of the Long Phoeung Company at the time died at the scene. They were 27 and 32 years old respectively.



The fire broke out around 12:30 am on Jan. 29 and soon engulfed the warehouse that was stocked with plastic bags, plastic accessories and other items, the report read. The whole content of the warehouse burned and the fire also spread to three nearby houses that were also destroyed.



The fire was brought under control around 10 am on Jan. 29, the report read, adding that the police is investigating the cause of the fire.



According to the National Police Department of Fire Prevention, Extinguishing and Rescue report, there were 872 fires in Cambodia during the first 10 months of 2020, which represented an increase of 110 fires compared to the same period in 2019. These fires damaged 654 houses and 505 market stalls, which was 78 houses and 123 stalls more than in 2019.



Those fires in 2020 caused the death of 23 persons compared to 17 persons during the same period in 2019, the report read.
