University Games to Support 2023 SEA Games’ Capacity Building

The International Taekwondo Federation sent technical officers, referees and judges to train local staff ahead of the regional sport event 



PHNOM PENH – The Secretary General of the Cambodia International Taekwondo Federation, Buon Hing Sothya, has lauded the Cambodia University Games, stating that they provided the opportunity for officials to prepare towards the 2023 SEA Games.



The 2022 National Higher and Technical High School Student Sports Competition, also known as University Games, started on June 21 and will run until June 30. They showcase 12 sports and 88 disciplines under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.



Speaking on June 26 at the National Institute of Physical Education and Sports, Sothya noted that 16 technical officers, referees and judges from the International Taekwondo Federation participated in the 2022 University Games. 



The secretary general pointed out that the ITF participation in the sport event helped technical officers, referees and judges of the Cambodian federation increase their capacity to host the 32nd SEA Games 2023.



 “At the same time, we will be able to look at their shortcomings to further improve the taekwondo competition during the 2023 SEA Games, which will be hosted by Cambodia for the first time in its history,” he added.



The ITF Taekwondo Federation has employed 16 technical commissioners, including five highly qualified referees and judges, to serve on international competitions. The ITF Asia Taekwondo Federation's policy also stipulates that during the upcoming SEA Games, Cambodia will be able to place up to five international referees to participate in the judging. 



“Our goal is to encourage all relevant components, including technical officers, and the participation of all athletes to respect the fairness of the spirit of sports that is acceptable to all." Sothya Stated.
