PHNOM PENH – The Walking Street pilot phase is set to begin on Feb. 1 along Sisowath Quay from Cambodia Post Office to the front of the Royal Palace.

It will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 6pm to 11pm in this phase

Walking Street is in a vibrant area with many nearby tourism spots such as Sosoro Museum, National Museum of Cambodia, Wat Botum Park, Old Market, Kandal Market and Chaktomuk Conference Hall.

Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng said on Jan. 21 that walking streets is a key priority for the city and aims to meet the needs of residents and tourists.

“I am optimistic that the Walking Street will draw more tourists to the city. These areas are a common feature in big cities, offering locals the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities at least once or twice a week,” Sreng said.

The 57-hectare area is split into three zones featuring shops, restaurants, hotels, bars and a pub street designed to bolster the nightlife experience for tourists.

Vehicles will be prohibited from 6pm to 11pm in these zones. Parking spaces and public restrooms will be set up to accommodate visitors.

“Phnom Penh Administration focuses on opening the pedestrian street for public use, while additional features such as painting spaces, circus performances, and traditional Khmer pinpeat music will be introduced later,” Sreng said.
