20 Killed in Cambodian Ammunition Store Explosion

PHNOM PENH—Up to 20 military personnel were reportedly killed, and many others were injured in an explosion at an ammunition depot on April 27 in Chbarmorn City in Kampong Speu Province.



"I was deeply shocked to learn about the ammunition explosion incident at the military region 3 in Kampong Speu Province on the afternoon of April 27, which claimed the lives of 20 military officials and injured several others," Prime Minister Hun Manet wrote on his official Facebook page.



Manet expressed his condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the tragedy on behalf of the Cambodian government.



According to the Prime Minister, the government will provide $20,000 to each family of the deceased and $5,000 (20 million riel) to the injured.



So far, it remains unclear how many civilians have also been affected by the explosion. The cause of the explosion and the total damages have not yet been determined.

When contacted on Saturday evening, the Provincial Police Commissioner of Kampong Speu, Sam Samoun, said he could not provide detailed information regarding the number of deaths, injuries, and total damages yet.



"Don't ask yet, as I am still in the operation," Samoun said.
