PHNOM PENH – The State Secretariat of Border Affairs has given an assurance aimed at Cambodians and foreigners that Ach Seh Island (Koh Ach Seh) belongs to Cambodia.

The declaration is in response to a Facebook user named "Uk Seila" who wrote that “Ach Seh Island belongs to Cambodia, then why does Google Maps address it in Vietnam?” with an attached picture from Google Maps.

Google Maps addresses Koh Ach Seh in Vietnam.

There is also a Cambodian police station on the island, the secretariate said in a press release on Feb. 26.

The island is in Kep commune of Kep province. Tourists visit the island daily, according to the secretariate.

In the review section on Google Maps, many people who had visited the island also wrote about the border problem six years ago, showing that the error has never been fixed.

“Google Maps is not an official map determining borders between a state and another,” the secretariate said.

The secretariat said they will work with Google on this matter.
