SIEM REAP – The Angkor Wat causeway will exceptionally and temporarily reopen to the public during the upcoming Khmer New Year.

In a statement released on April 10, the APSARA National Authority announced the 200-meter-long sandstone causeway, which is Angkor Wat’s main entrance on the Western side, will be open to the public from April 10 to 23.

“The temporary opening coincides with Siem Reap's celebration of the 10th anniversary of Angkor Sangkranta, ensuring a smooth and successful event,” the document said.

The causeway has been under renovation and inaccessible to the public since 2016. Repairs, which are jointly carried out by the APSARA National Authority and the Sophia University of Japan, have reached their second phase.

The project was scheduled to be completed by 2020 but the reopening of the causeway had to be postponed due to financial problems and the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the meantime, a temporary floating bridge has been installed to access the temple and avoid any potential accidents during the bridge's renovation.
