KOH KONG — Going down the Preah Ang Keo creek on bamboo rafts about 300 kilometers from Phnom Penh, tourists can enjoy venturing along the waterways of Sre Ambel district in Koh Kong province the old fashion way.

People of Phum Teuk Srae village have set up bamboo rafting tours for tourists so they can show them the natural beauty of their area. Although unusual, some young tourists actually prefer sitting on these rudimental rafts rather than conventional boats.

“I've never been on a bamboo rafting ride before, so this is my first experience,” said Leang Vuthorng, one of the tourists, as she was getting on board. “The creek is not overly deep and I believe this raft is big and sturdy enough to hold passengers on a tour. We've all got our life jackets on top of it.”

Even though the raft floats, it is not fully water tight. Some water will occasionally make its way to the top, giving the passengers a chance to connect with nature after days or weeks of work.

“This has been a far more entertaining activity for me than riding a boat,” said Sao Mengleang, also a passenger on the raft. “Here, I am able to simply sit on the raft while my legs are submerged in the water as I take in the surrounding scenery.”

In addition to the raft ride that costs 10,000 riels, or $2.5, per person, tourists can also experience other outdoor activities such as camping, riding conventional boats and hiking up the mountains in the area, with villagers ready to assist them.
