Bank Chiefs Get Client Protection Training

PHNOM PENH – Top officials of banks and microfinance institutions are to get extra training to make sure the interests of their customers are safeguarded.

The training programs, announced on June 14, are aimed at CEOs, shareholders and members of boards of directors and will cover governance in ensuring commitment and effective client protection.

They were launched by the Association of Banks in Cambodia, Cambodia Microfinance Association, Cambodian Association of Finance and Technology and the CERISE+SPTF social and environmontal performance management organisation with support from the National Bank of Cambodia and Luxembourg Aid & Development.

The training is the first of its kind that requires the top leadership of all banks and financial institutions to take part in an effort of the Cambodia financial industry to ensure client protection.

All CEOs and at least one shareholder or board director are required to join a full-day training to review the role of the board and senior management in ensuring that strong client protection practices are incorporated and sustained in their companies.

The course highlights the specific governance-related aspect of the global client protection standards and banking code of conduct.

NBC assistant governor RATH Sovannorak said at the launch of the program said the initiative encouraged shareholders and top management of banks and financial institutions to better understand and recognize their roles in ensuring consumer protection and market conduct.

Eight of the training programs will be held this year with more to come in 2024.
