PHNOM PENH – Prime Minister Hun Manet has told South Korea that Cambodia supports the country’s bid to host World Expo 2030 in the city of Busan.

The PM also called for increased cooperation between the countries.

Manet met Chung Hwang-Keun, South Korea’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, who is in Phnom Penh on an official visit.

In a readout of the meeting on Aug. 28, Chung highlighted the close partnership between the countries in terms of international cooperation and official development assistance after ties were restored in the late 1990s. He noted the great potential of Cambodia in terms of natural resources and demographics.

PM Manet thanked the Korean side for continued support and care for Cambodian workers in Korea through the Labor Support Center, which provides services for workers in all countries.

“Manet also expressed Cambodia’s support for South Korea’s bid to host the 2030 World Expo,” it said.

The PM also asked the Korean side to encourage investment in Cambodia, especially in the agricultural sector for export. The two sides also agreed to strengthen and expand cooperation and trade in all sectors.

Busan is competing with Rome in Italy and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia to host the grand exhibition. Themed ‘Transforming Our World, Navigating Toward a Better Future’, South Korea plans to host the expo from May to October 2030.

The Bureau International des Expositions, an international body created to supervise international exhibitions, will announce the result in November after voting by its 171 members, including Cambodia.
