PHNOM PENH – Cambodia will soon implement a pilot border pass to ease the crossing of the Cambodia-Thailand border for Cambodian people living in the provinces bordering Thailand.

The implementation will be effective from January next year and will go through six-month experimentation, the government said on Dec. 17 in a press release.

The Cambodia-Thailand border pass will cost 20,000 riel ($5) and will be valid for two years. Passholders will be able to extend it by a year for an additional 10,000 riel ($2.5).

Processing the information and editing the pass will take up to five days.

Applicants will have to provide the administration with a copy of the family or resident book, a birth certificate, and photos. Youngsters under the age of 12 may travel with their parents.

Passholders will no longer need a passport to go to Thailand.

The governors of the Cambodian provinces bordering Thailand, which consists of Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Pailin, Pursat, and Koh Kong, are in charge of reviewing, deciding on, and signing the border pass for the citizens living in the province.

Proceeds from the provision of Cambodian-Thailand pass services at each municipal administration shall be distributed to 85 percent of the municipal administration and 15 percent to the provincial administration.

The implementation will automatically be continued if there is no new announcement, the press release said.
