KAMPONG CHAM – An enterprise in Kampong Cham is turning bananas into sugar, wine, candy, snacks and coconut candy, which helps support local farmers with 500 hands of bananas per day.

Yous Phally, the owner of the New Idea Enterprise which produces sugar that can be used in cooking and drinks, said her business started in 2013 after farmers in Chamka Leu district found it hard to sell their bananas in 2010.

“Many farmers faced a market crisis due to over-importing fruit from neighboring countries,” she said.

“The bananas were not sold and became spoiled. Thus, my dad found a way to process the finished product of banana sugar that was passed down by his grandmother.”

Phally said it was hard at the beginning of production due to requiring all human power. There was no machine, so her family decided to design their own, which took a year to complete.

Machines process all sugar products except banana skins. It takes ten days to get the final product. One kilo of sugar requires seven kilos of bananas.
