Government Announces Baccalaureate and Diploma Exams Delayed Indefinitely

Cambodia's Education Minister Hang Chuon Naron has decided to delay Baccalaureate and Diploma exams amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision to delay the exams was announced today as another preventative measure against the COVID-19 pandemic.

PHNOM PENH--The Ministry of Education on Wednesday announced they will postpone the Baccalaureate and Diploma exams in a bid to curb the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). This comes after the government ordered the closure of public and private schools nationwide on March 16.

The Ministry of Education said that the Higher Secondary Diploma examinations that were scheduled to take place between August 3 and August 10 would be postponed until further notice. The same was said of the Higher Secondary Baccalaureate Examination, which had been scheduled to run from August 17 to September 9, 2020, but are now delayed indefinitely.

Following the ministry’s March 16 closure of schools, all students have been instructed to study via E-Learning programs available on the ministry’s website, as well as official YouTube and Facebook pages.

The ministry explained that lessons could be found at the official online E-Learning Center, along with E-School Cambodia, Wiki School systems which are also available as mobile apps. Lessons will also be broadcast on a range of TV stations, including Apsara Channel 11, OneTV, Channel 6, Channel 35, TV Wiki School TV, and more.

Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday said that the government has decided to cancel Khmer New Year celebrations that would pose a significant risk to the country, given the volume of travel within Cambodia during this time. The government has encouraged people not to return to their hometowns and instead continue to work with just small, limited celebrations over the New Year period.

In addition, the government has ordered the closure of schools, museums, karaoke bars, gyms, theaters, massage spas, casinos and the Royal Palace, across the country in a bid to further control the pandemic. Public concerts and religious gatherings have also been suspended.
