PHNOM PENH – The Great Supreme Patriarch Venerable Tep Vong is in poor health and being treated at Calmette Hospital.

Venerable Tep Vong, 92, has no disease other than his old age, said Venerable Yon Seng Yeat, deputy head of the secretariat of Sangha Council.

Venerable Yon Seng Yeat said the top monk was weak after being unable to eat and was able to drink only a little water.

“His health is like an old man. He still remembers well and knows all the monks. But now he does not say much,” he said.

Venerable Tep Vong was taken into hospital on Jan. 6 and doctors are monitoring his health, he said.

He had been hospitalized several times due to old age.

Venerable Tep Vong, a Maha Nikaya sect member, was among the first monks to be re-ordained after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979. In 1991, he became supreme patriarch with the title samdech.

In a restructuring of Buddhism religious leadership in 2006, he became the Great Supreme Patriarch of Cambodia.

He is also a member of the Throne Council.
