PHNOM PENH – Temperatures across the country for today and tomorrow will reach 40 degrees with the northern Oddar Meanchey province possibly hitting 42 degrees due to the El Nino effect and global warming, forecasters say.

Cambodia is experiencing an extreme dry season heatwave with many parts of the country recording high temperatures.

Chan Youttha, spokesperson of Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, said temperatures on April 26 and 27 in most part of the country will reach 40 degrees.

He said that the northern highland and northwest part of the central plains is forecast to reach 42 degrees while other provinces and Phnom Penh will experience 40 degrees. The capital has had no rain since December.

Samrong city in Oddar Meanchey province was the hottest area  with temperatures peaking from 11am to 3pm.

Youttha said temperatures will drop from late April or early May.

He said temperatures are rising from year to year. This year’s average increase is 1.37 degrees which is one of the highest levels.

He said El Nino and global warming have been causing heatwaves across many countries in Asia.

Chhum Chantha contributed to the story.
