PHNOM PENH – Vehicle owners with old-style number plates may get new QR code plates free under a plan being considered by officials.

“The QR code is beneficial in many ways,” Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol said.

“When we scan the code, it’ll show if the plate is real or fake. One more thing is that when we must fine car owners we can track their address.”

Chanthol was speaking on Mar. 7 at the three-year anniversary celebration of personalized number plates.

He said his ministry is working with the Ministry of Economy and Finance to change the plates.

Both ministries have discussed the way they will call on vehicle owners to change the plates. Discussions were continuing because the plan involved use of the national budget.

Chanthol said he expected that sales of special number plates would increase by 5% by 2023 as the economy had begun recovering.

From 2020 to 2022, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport sold 118,000 number plates, generating more than $54 million.

Of these, more than 100,000 special number plates sold for $26 million and more than 16,000 personalized number plates earned more than $28 million.
