PHNOM PENH – Deputy Prime Minister Neth Savoeun has called on security forces and all relevant authorities to join hands to ensure security and safety in the Water Festival.

The event takes place from Nov. 26 to 28. Millions of people are expected to come to the capital and 10,000 members of security forces will be deployed to protect them.

The festival returns this year after being canceled for the last three years due to COVID-19 and ASEAN Summits.

Savoeun said also that many people will flock to the city to welcome the new government.

As a former national police chief from 2008 to 2023, he shared the critical challenges and duties of the armed forces to strengthen their capacity to protect the public.

Traffic issues, gang problems and thieves were the main issues that needed attention, he said at a meeting of authorities on Nov. 22.

Officials of other provinces were also obliged to ensure the security and safety of the public. In the meantime, online surveillance must be strengthened to eliminate fake information that could lead to misunderstandings during the festival.
