SIEM REAP – Six sandstone statues have been found during restoration of one of Ta Prohm’s gates.

The APSARA National Authority, which oversees the Angkor Archaelogical Park, said its staff and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) workers found the statues under the eroded stone structure of the south gate in the middle of November when the team were gathering scattered stones to reconstruct the gate.

APSARA archaeologist Net Simon said the statues included two of Buddha sheltered in a naga, a Avalokitesvara statue and two Buddha statues with broken head and hands and a pediment which has a carving of the Buddha.

Repairs started in January 2023. The project includes repairs of the 20-meter-long gate and four faces of Ta Prohm on top. The project is expected to be completed within two years.

Ta Prohm temple was built in the 12th century during the reign of Jayavarman the Seventh. The temple is known for its large trees growing on the temple, creating an attraction on the ancient towers.
