Wild Elephant Found Dead in Mondulkiri

PHNOM PENH — A female elephant was found dead on March 24 near a river stream on the sides of Thmor Mountains at Pou Hyam village, Sen Monoroum commune, O Raing district, Mondulkiri province.



It is suspected that the elephant fell from the heights of the hill. The wild animal was 4.2 meters long and 2.3 meters high.



The death of the elephant was reported by local people who discovered the body to the Mondulkiri Provincial Administration and the environmental force Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) so that they can examine the scene.



Sok Kheang, director of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries of Mondulkiri province, confirmed that the carcass of the dead wild elephant was swollen and smelly.



He added that the female dead elephant was not carrying any baby at the moment of its death.



“The wild elephant that died in O Raing district did not have a baby in the womb,” he said.



“After the inspection team, the body of the elephant was taken and buried in the forest,” he added.
