Women Step up as Digital Society Advances

PHNOM PENH – In the digital age, women say they understand technology well like their male peers and their rights to contribute to developing society and the country.

Cambodia is celebrating the 113th International Women’s Day under the theme ‘Women and Girls in the Digital Transformation’.

Student San Sreytoch, 21, said girls and women have a good understanding of technology and can work the same as men.

Giving women the opportunity and encouragement are significant factors which they need from family and society for success in their careers and their involvement in helping society in the digital age, she said.

“Women have ability and want to show that a woman can do everything and nothing can stop her. Even if they are housewives, they can also do business at home sometimes and get good results.”

Hour Sreynin, also a student, said most Cambodian women are smarter at digital careers with some showing their talent and ability in many sectors.

“Women must be brave and value themselves,” she said.

“Women play an important role in society as well as contributing to developing the country. Women work a lot of tasks that men should know, and women can do what men can do.”

Sreynin encourages women to be more courageous in overcoming problems, given that they now have more rights to express themselves and participate in activities in society.

Vanara Thina, 19, who is studying graphic design at university, said she wanted to see other women get a chance to study digital-related majors.

She encouraged other females to choose a field of study that does not have many female students particularly in journalism or graphic design.

“Women can also study the same skills as men, because now is the digital age we need to show a lot of ability and talent more than that of the past,” Thina said. However, they still faced discrimination when they want to do something to follow their dreams.

Another young student, Sok Sreypich, said she understands that every job needs women to be involved and more women taking part shows the growth of the sector.
