PHNOM PENH-- Cambodia has arrested a gang of three foreigners for possessing and trafficking illicit drugs, seizing over 16 kg of narcotics, the country's Anti-Drug Department (ADP) said in a news release on Sunday.

The trio, males aged between 21 and 31, were apprehended Wednesday night in raids on two locations in the capital Phnom Penh after an investigation for several months.

"A total of 16.49 kg of ecstasy, ketamine and nimetazepam were confiscated from the trio's possession during the crackdowns," the ADP said, adding that another 5.6 kg of unknown substance was also seized from them.

The Southeast Asian country has no death sentence for a drug trafficker. Under its law, someone found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of illicit drugs could be jailed for life.

According to the ADP, Cambodia nabbed 19,940 drug-related suspects, including 499 foreigners, in 2023, with 2.97 tonnes of narcotics seized.

The seized drugs included heroin, ecstasy, ketamine, cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, and cathinone.
