PHNOM PENH – The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts will run a free training course on ancestral art skills from February until December.

Former prime minister Hun Sen told the ministry to pay more attention to ancestral art skills courses to preserve them and create jobs, especially for poor and vulnerable people.

Siyonn Sophearith, director-general of the Directorate General of Techniques for Cultural Affairs, said the ministry intends for 300 people to register.

The skills include ancient mask making, silver/copper carving, leather carving, stone carving, mould making, silk weaving, krama weaving, pottery making, musical instruments, color painting and traditional painting.

Sophearith said the ministry will run more classes if numbers exceed the limit, in line with Hun Sen’s wish to see 30,000-60,000 young people learning these skills.

Training will take place in 13 places across the country. Students from poor or vulnerable families will receive a monthly stipend of 280,000 riel. However, they must adhere strictly to the conditions of study.

Those interested can contact the secretariat of ancestral art skills vocational training from Monday to Friday during working hours on 017 431 302, 088 853 56 36 or 096 522 73 69.
