PHNOM PENH – Six hundred and seventy people were killed in traffic accidents and almost 1,800 were injured in the first five months of 2024 amid a seven percent rise in traffic accidents compared to the same period last year.

Chev Hak, Deputy Commissioner of National Police in charge of traffic and public order, said that there were 1,296 traffic accidents, 55 percent of which were at night.

“We saw that 40 percent of accidents were due to speeding, 24 percent due to disrespecting priority, nine percent for not driving on the right and eight percent for carelessness,” Chev Hak said at a press conference on the implementation of the Road Traffic Law on June 25.

Traffic accidents caused by alcohol decreased significantly while there were four accidents related to trucks transporting workers in Preah Sihanouk, Svay Rieng and Kampong Chhnang provinces. In these, 104 workers were injured.

Two people died and 13 were injured in 11 railway incidents in Pursat, Kampot, Sihanoukville, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey and Phnom Penh.

Last year, 1590 people died in traffic accidents. Chev Hak said the number of accidents remained a concern for the authorities.
