PHNOM PENH – The Tourism and Information ministries have started using an online platform, ‘verify.gov.kh’, to make it easier for people to verify the validity of documents and crack down on fakes.

The platform, developed by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, promises to be reliable and aims to save time and money.

It will use QR codes linked to blockchain technology. The ministry says the technology provides high security for each document. Paper copies with the QR code will no longer need an official stamp to be recognised as valid.

Tourism Minister Sok Soken, Chea Vandeth, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, and Information Minister Neth Pheaktra signed a memorandum of understanding on the new system on Oct. 31.

Soken said the MOU is a significant step in verifying and validating tourism-related digital documents. The platform is available in Khmer and English.

This was the sixth time the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications had launched the ‘verify.gov.kh’ platform for the ministries, state institutions and higher-education institutes.

Under the MOU, the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications will also organize internet infrastructure, as well as determine the demand for computers or other state digital devices and the use of licensed software.

The high-speed internet access and infrastructure at the Ministry of Tourism will enhance the infrastructure for more efficient information and data exchange throughout the country, Soken added.

The MOU also highlighted digital skills training for the ministries’ civil servants to help them adapt to the evolving digital technology landscape, which is a key priority.

Vandeth said his ministry is committed to digital adaptation in tourism and the Ministry of Tourism’s “BUILD + 3Ds” strategy.

In August, the Ministry of Tourism set out the five strategic pillars (BUILD) and three development priority works (3Ds) to turn Cambodia into one of the world’s leading tourism destinations with diversity, opportunities and warmth.

The strategy is aimed at enhancing the work of the ministry’s officials at all levels and for cooperation with relevant partners both at sub-national level, national level, and international level to improve the efficiency, equity, and work harmonization environment for facilitation between relevant ministries and institutions, and all actors involved in the tourism development.
