PHNOM PENH  – The Ministry of Agriculture has denied owning a Lexus 470 with state license plates which was allegedly used for election campaigning.

The denial came after the picture was drawn to the attention of social media users. It brought accusations of using state property for the ruling Cambodian People’s Party benefit.

The ministry said on July 13 it did not have a Lexus 470 on its inventory and the state license plate 17 2-0731 was a fake. It asked authorities to find the fraudster and for them to take responsibility under the law.

Korn Savang, advocacy coordinator for election monitor Comfrel, said they had received one report involving a state license plate.

"We haven’t investigated that case, so we can't say if it’s true or false," he said.

But Comfrel's team had found about four cases of cars without plates being used in the ruling party's election campaign since the campaign started.

The National Election Committee said the election campaign has gone well so far.
