PHNOM PENH–Twenty public secondary schools in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville have been selected to offer Chinese language classes this coming school year.

According to a post on its official Facebook page, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport has drafted a 5-year strategic plan for the development of Chinese language education for 2023-2028, and Minister of Education Hang Chuon Naron has requested that China speed up criteria for staff recruitment.

Following the signing of the Chinese language Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by Cambodia and China in 2022, the minister had said that he meant to set up a coordinating committee for Chinese-language education and had agreed in principle to select 20 contracted Chinese language teachers.

He met on Sept. 28 with a delegation from the Chinese Ministry of Education’s Centre for Language Education and Cooperation.

According to the ministry’s post, Cambodia has requested that China appoint a permanent Chinese language education officer in Cambodia.

The Cambodian government will provide a monthly salary of $180 and has asked the Chinese government to provide an additional $400 per month, the post read, adding that China had agreed to give additional allowance to the staff and prepare Chinese language tests for the teachers.
