PHNOM PENH — Two newborn Irrawaddy dolphins were spotted on March 22, the first one in the Koh Preah village of Stung Treng province, and the second one in Prek Prasab district in Kratie province.

In a message on its official Facebook page, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries said on March 23 that the research group of the Fisheries Administration and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) had identified a newborn Irrawaddy dolphin in Koh Preah village, which is located in Siem Bouk district’s Koh Preah commune in Stung Treng province.

The newborn was seen swimming along with six adult Irrawaddy dolphins, the ministry said in the message.

On the same day, the group found a dead dolphin in Prek Prasap district in Kratie province, about 10 kilometers from Kampi village. The baby dolphin was reported to have been only one or two days old, weighing around 11 kilograms and being 1.06-meter long.

The death is believed to have been caused by the adult dolphins harassing the newborn, the research group said, adding the cause of its death was being further investigated.

Since the start of 2024, five of the newborn dolphins identified are alive and two have died.
