PHNOM PENH – “Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” is a proverb that inspires many people to achieve their dream.

Likewise, getting a grade A in the national Baccalaureate exam has always been Tork Phirawin’s dream.

He has now done even better with the top score out of the 98,460 who passed.

Phirawin, from Siem Reap province, has valued education since he was in third grade when he was ranked top three in the class, the first time he felt a sense of accomplishment.

“In grade three, my father dedicated his time to teaching me and giving me extra classes after school. So I got a great result for the first time,” he said.

“It became my biggest motivation.”

Nothing Comes Easy

In his senior year in high school, Phirawin prepared a study routine, following it closely with an easy day. He got up as early as 5am to study and memorize the lessons of biology and history.

He did not waste his time and was not careless about practicing exercises, given that he had given himself a grade-A goal.

“I was confident that I could get a good result, but I was surprised that I could get 100 points,” he said.

Phirawin is preparing to get into the University of Health and Sciences. He has wanted to be a doctor since he was young.

He encouraged those who could not pass the exam to try again next year and always keep their hope alive. He suggested that they can also learn vocational skills so that they can secure a job in the future.

There were 1,673 students with A grades, 6964 with B grades, 18,308 with C, 34,246 with D and 37,269 with E.

This year saw a slight rise in the pass rate compared to 2022 when it was 72.33 percent. It also represented the highest percentage since 2014 when reforms took place.
