PHNOM PENH – Cambodia and India are planning to launch direct flights between both countries by the end of the month.

Defense Minister Tea Seiha discussed the new service in terms of people-to-people connectivity when he met Indian Ambasssador Devyani Uttam Khobragade on Oct. 25.

The service will boost tourism and trade between the countries.

Both noted the rapid growth of the relationship and said they would extend the scope of cooperation, particularly in defense and security, their navies and the scope of technology to support the digital sector in Cambodia.

Both noted significant progress in defense after the signing of a memorandum of understanding to strengthen military ties between the armies and joint training and assistance work.

Tea Seiha thanked India for its support in developing all sectors, including the economy, commerce, culture and defense. The ambassador also recognized the rapid growth of the Cambodia-India relationship, especially in cultural and science sectors.

Both countries are negotiating current and future trade preferences along with a free trade agreement. They also agreed to extend the scope of operation of the navies.

The ambassador invited the minister to officially visit India soon.

From January to September, trade between the countries reached nearly $348 million, up 7.6 percent on the same period last year.
