PHNOM PENH – Cambodia on Tuesday banned students from using smartphones in classrooms, saying that the move is to motivate students to focus on their studies.

"The use of smartphones or electronic devices, that do not serve as a learning activity, is prohibited in classrooms or during school hours," Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Hang Chuon Naron said in a directive.

He said the decision was to encourage students to spend their time studying rather than playing games or using social media that is not related to their studies.

Naron advised teachers and class presidents at all public schools across the Southeast Asian country to push students to read books or do research in libraries during their free time.

The minister also urged parents or legal guardians to instruct their children to use smartphones and other electronic devices for their study purposes only.
