PHNOM PENH — Senior Minister Thong Khon has asked the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) to help train Cambodian athletes as the country plans to include equestrian disciplines in the 2029 Asian Youth Games.

Khon, who is also president of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), on Jan. 30 met with Ingmar De Vos, head of FEI, and discussed this request for cooperation.

The sports official asked FEI for assistance to help train Cambodians in these disciplines and in horse care techniques. Khon also requested guidance to set up the equestrian facility and riding arena according to international standards in order for Cambodia to include equestrian disciplines in the 5th Asian Youth Games in 2029, which the country will host.

According to Khon, getting training with FEI support is crucial to help Cambodians develop in this field.

In the meantime, the Cambodia Equestrian Federation has planned to launch a horse-care training course for children of poor families with the FEI support.

Cambodian riders have taken part in the Southeast Asian Games three times since 2013, and won a bronze medal in the 2017 SEA Games in Malaysia. In 2023, Cambodian equestrian athletes won a gold medal in the FEI Southeast Asian Youth Cup in Thailand.
