PHNOM PENH – The Cambodian National Volleyball Team will participate in various competitions this year in run up to the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Thailand in 2025, said Volleyball Federation of Cambodia (VFC) Secretary General Aing Serey Piseth.

Cambodian team won a bronze medal during the regional games in Vietnam in 2022 and a silver medal when it hosted the games in May last year. The country’s team is expecting to maintain the momentum during the 33rd edition in Thailand, which will be held next year.

Speaking to reporters on Feb. 18 after the final match of the Techo Volleyball League, the country’s first national volleyball league, Piseth revealed that the country’s volleyball team will take part in a series of international competitions this year.

Piseth said that Cambodia applied to participate in the Under-20 Asia Championship and may face off Vietnam in the qualification match. He said that the country intends to host the match.

Cambodia is also planning to host the Tri-Nation Cup, a regional volleyball tournament featuring Cambodia, Malaysia and Singapore. The competition might also expand to Laos and Vietnam.

Piseth said that Cambodia will also join the regional Southeast Asian Volleyball League, also known as SEA V.League. Last year’s edition saw four nations competing: Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Philippines.

The top VFC official said the Southeast Asia Volleyball Association (SAVA) is now looking to include more countries in the league.

“SAVA is pushing to have eight countries in total so Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam will participate,” he said.

He added that participating in the competition is not about the prize but to promote the country’s image and the team’s capability.

On Feb. 18, the Bodyguard Headquarters Club crowned Cambodia’s volleyball national league after beating Visakha club by 3-1 set at the National Olympic Stadium’s Indoor Hall. This was the only loss for Visakha in the tournament, which previously defeated the Bodyguard club twice in previous rounds.

Phnom Penh Municipal Police club defeated the Ministry of Interior’s team in a 5-set match to take the third place. The Phnom Penh police club came from behind to upset the Interior Ministry, winning 3-2.

The Techo Volleyball League started in January and saw eight teams competing.
