First Equinox Expected on Mar. 21

SIEM REAP – The equinox, when the sun rises over the top tower of Angkor Wat, is set to take place next week, the APSARA Authority says.

The equinox in March is usually called vernal equinox while one in September is called autumnal equinox.

“Equinox or sunrise at the top of Angkor Wat in 2024 will take place on Mar, 21,” it said.

The equinox was originally inscribed on ancient stones when the days and nights are equal, creating a spectacular view of the temple.

To watch this event, tourists are advised to arrive at Angkor Wat just before 5am.

The Ministry of Tourism has organized a photo contest to promote the event. The three best photos will win prizes from 500,000 to 1 million riel.

Last year, the sun rays during the event were used as a glorious flame for the 32nd SEA Games and 12th ASEAN Para Games when Cambodia hosted the games for the first time.

The first equinox in 2023, which also fell on Mar 21, attracted 8,726 tourists, including 2,226 foreigners.
