PHNOM PENH – Cambodia’s sen kra-ob (SKO) fragrant rice has won a gold medal in a competition run by a Chinese research institution.

The variety was among 61 rice samples, 12 of which were from five ASEAN countries and samples from China's autonomous regions and rice-growing provinces.

The 1st China-ASEAN Taste Quality Appraisal Activities of High-Quality Indica Rice Variety competition was organized on Oct. 28 by Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Seed Management Station and Rice Research Institute of Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Science.

The Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF) said the fragrant rice had been recognized by the competition committee as a delicious rice variety. This gold medal would enhance its reputation in the world, especially in expanding to a wider market.

This achievement comes from the efforts of Cambodian farmers in planting and taking care of the rice plants. The federation encourages farmers to keep producing more high-quality and delicious rice grains.

SKO is a non-seasonal rice variety that has been cultivated by Cambodian farmers since the mid-1990s. It is popular in the international market.

Technical and financial cooperation agreements to achieve a good fragrant rice variety were established by the Cambodian Agricultural Research and Development Institute, the University of Agriculture, the CRF, the International Finance Corporation and the Cambodia Agriculture Value Chain Program in 2019.

Through study and research, CARDI scientists launched a new fragrant rice strain called sen kro-ob 01 the same year.
