PHNOM PENH – Prime Minister Hun Manet is going to Japan to mark 50 years of friendship and cooperation between ASEAN and Japan and discuss common goals in the region and mutual national interests.

He left on Dec. 15 for the Dec. 16-18 discussions to bolster the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Meetings will include the launch of a new Joint Vision Statement on ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation in the themes of heart-to-heart partnership across generations, co-creation of economy and society for the future, and partners of peace and stability.

“The summit will be a historical milestone for ASEAN and Japan to realize our common goals of promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the region,” Cambodia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said.

On the sidelines, Hun Manet will meet Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio to further strengthen the Cambodia-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership as well as learn the common interests and concerns on regional and international issues.

“The two prime ministers will witness the signing of exchanges of notes on Japanese grant aid for three projects related to hydrography, water supply and e-government as well as other cooperation documents in the fields of digital, banking and energy,” the ministry said.

Hun Manet will also talk at the Asia Zero Emission Community to figure out policies on energy transition and promote cooperation towards decarbonization in Asia.

He will also meet Prime Minister Lao Sonexay Siphandone and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the Cambodian community in Japan.

Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, Minister of Education Hang Chuon Naron, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sok Chenda Sophea and other government officials and business leaders will accompany Hun Manet on the trip.

ASEAN and Japan officially agreed to establish a strategic partnership in September 2023 at the 26th ASEAN-Japan Summit in Jakarta.
