PHNOM PENH – Former prime minister Hun Sen on Feb. 21 met his “god brother” and Thailand’s ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra in Bangkok.

Thaksin was released from detention last weekend due to his old age and health issues. He had been sentenced to eight years in jail for corruption and abuse of power. Later, the sentence was reduced to one year.

Hun Sen arrived in Thailand on a private plane and reached Thaksin’s home later in the day.

“Two former prime ministers met and did not talk about politics but recalled 32 years of friendship we have been together since 1992,” Hun Sen said.

In photos posted on his Facebook page, the two former PM were accompanied by Thaksin’s daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Hun Sen’s son-in-law Sok Puthyvuth.

Hun Sen, president of ruling Cambodian People’s Party, also invited Paetongtarn, leader of Pheu Thai Party, to visit Cambodia on Mar. 14 and 15.

Thaksin attended Hun Sen’s birthday last year before returning to Thailand from self-imposed exile.
