PM Orders Timely Response to Floods

PHNOM PENH – Prime Minister Hun Manet has ordered authorities to be ready to intervene and help people in provinces affected by floods. Pursat has become another province hit hard.
In a voice message on Sept. 29, Hun Manet told authorities at all levels to prepare all means and material to rescue people.
“Monitor and respond timely in case of floods in the area of responsibility,” he told capital and provincial governors.
The PM also instructed Senior Minister Kun Kim, first deputy chairman of the National Committee for Disaster Management, to monitor the situation with governors and prepare additional relief.
He also told national police commissioner, the commander of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, the Royal Gendarmerie, and the commanders of the Army, Navy and Air forces to make the necessary forces and materials ready to be sent to affected areas.
The PM asked Aun Porn Moniroth, Minister of Economy and Finance, to release food and equipment needed by the people in the event of of requests from the capital and provinces.
He told the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to prepare rice seeds and other materials needed for replanting crops.
Kampong Thom, Preah Vihear, Tbong Khmum, Kratie, Sihanoukville and Koh Kong provinces were reportedly affected by floods. In Pursat province, the Pursat river reached an alarming level and water started to flood houses in Pursat town.
Keo Vay, director of the Department of Water Resources and Meteorology of Pursat province, called on people living along the river to be more careful and prepare to find a safe place as the river rose.
Kun Kim arrived in Pursat earlier in the day to monitor the situation.
Water from the Sangke river flooded parts of Battambang town and other districts on Sept. 29.
