PHNOM PENH — Prime Minister Hun Manet has called upon young people to pay closer attention to arts and culture and affirmed his support for the creation of new performing arts.

Hun Manet presided over a celebration of the 26th National Cultural Day and a solidarity dinner on Mar. 7, four days after the official date.

This year marks the tenth time that the “Youth for the National Culture” theme has been chosen.

During the celebration, Hun Manet called upon the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts to collaborate more closely with art schools and support the supply of technical materials to young people who intend to create new performing arts while maintaining the national identity, ethics and professionalism.

He also encouraged them to focus solely on quality of the works and avoid copying from other modern and traditional art works. Quality and original work could boost recognition, trust and open up more markets.

The PM said he also intends to see more young professionals participate in training, research and dissemination of national culture.

Hun Manet said “respect for national culture” is easily expressed yet the public have to deepen their understanding and knowledge of national arts, culture and participation in promoting national culture.

“The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts should join hands with artists in producing all related-educational articles, pictures and short films,” Hun Manet said.

“Conducting more cultural events including the Angkor Thanksgiving event, Angkor Dictation, Angkor Remembrance event, traditional arts music concerts and other cultural events could mainstream national culture among the public.

It was essential for young people to engage closely in arts and culture, in which they should also lessen the influence of external cultures that could jeopardize our own cultural legacy.

The celebration of National Cultural Day not only aims to commemorate Cambodian ancestors but also aims to cultivate the love, care and protection of national cultural art.

National Culture Day was organized first in 1999 with the theme of “Legacy of Jayavarman VII”.
