PHNOM PENH — Four young Cambodians have launched a community initiative they names “Nirandaa” to raise funds so they can help poor students in Siem Reap province get school supplies.

On Dec. 25, they will start their first project by bringing materials such as bags, books, pencils, pens, clothes and shoes to students of three primary schools in Siem Reap province: Hun Sen Anchanh Primary School, Kurata Unity Primary School, and Prey Primary School.

Most of the students at those schools walk barefoot on the red-dust road to go to school and get back home under the burning sun at noon time, said Mean Sok Raksa, one of Nirandaa’s founders. To get an education, they are willing to go without any complaints although they are very young, she said.

In addition, some students go to school without backpacks and study materials, but still persist because they want an education, Raksa said.

The group members, who are currently fundraising for money or supplies until Dec. 23, intend to eventually also help orphans and the elderly, that is, people in need, Raksa said. They plan to hold campaigns and events in the future to especially continue, she said, “providing assistance to the children who are in need of proper education and study materials.”

For information, the group can be reached at 089 353-535.
