Sports officials look to expanding success

PHNOM PENH – Cambodia has won a record six gold medals at the SEA Games in Vietnam, beating the four gold medals it won at the last event in 2019.

Vath Chamroeun, general secretary of the Cambodian SEA Games Organizing Committee (CAMSOC), said the new record demonstrates positive progress in sports as Cambodia gears up towards hosting the 32nd SEA Games in 2023.

“What we have noticed in the regional games is Cambodian athletes aim to win more medals and this is an encouragement to our athletes who work hard to break records,” Chamrouen said.

CAMSOC expressed support and encouraged all national sports federations to improve abilities and technique for athletes, coaches and technical officials to get ready for the next regional event.

To win more medals at the next SEA Games, Cambodia is working on improving the sports in which its athletes have not won medals.

It also aims to keep improving the capacity of athletes who earned silver and bronze medals so that they will be able to win gold.

On May 19, Cambodian wrestler Sou Bali won the fifth gold medal in the 125kg men’s freestyle category while the female petanque team won the 6th.
