PHNOM PENH – Having been judged harshly because of his disability,  para powerlifting gold medalist Kong Sela encouraged young people to decide what they want and accomplish their goals regardless of obstacles.

“I have been looked down on and underestimated but I still believe in myself,” he said after winning two gold medals in the Men’s Up to 107kg discipline of the Para Powerlifting on June 7.

The former tuk-tuk driver has overcome his obstacles to train for competitions to win medals for the country. One of his main driving forces is his sick mother who is being treated at home.

“I decided to do something to make her happy,” Sela said, adding that if he loved doing something, he would put his mind to it at all costs.

He urged young people to take action to accomplish what they love.

“Young people should set their goal and achieve it too, someday,” Sela said.

Sela will keep driving a tuk-tuk and will be waiting for the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Thailand in 2026.
