PHNOM PENH – Prime Minister Hun Manet has announced Dec. 29 as ‘Cambodia’s Peace Day’ to honor the sacrifice made to bring peace to the country.

This day of commemoration is considered a national event and will be a public holiday, said Hun Manet in a sub-decree dated Jan. 1, his first act of 2024.

The announcement came after the government held a ceremony to mark the 25th anniversary of the Win-Win Policy implementation.

The ruling Cambodian People’s Party has praised the policy, with former PM Hun Sen viewing it as having played a major role in ending the Khmer Rouge regime and reuniting the country.

In January 2022, the Cambodian government included Dec. 29 in the national calendar to celebrate the end of the country’s civil war.  However, the day was not considered a public holiday at that time.

PM Hun Manet said that the establishment of Cambodia’s Peace Day is in response to the sacred desire of the Cambodian people who love peace and hate war and to recall complete end to the war and the establishment of complete peace on Dec. 29, 1998.

He said the day is a reminder of gratitude for the sacrifice of all Cambodians who fought hard in all battles – wars, diplomacy and politics – until the war in Cambodia came to a complete end and unity and peace were achieved throughout the country and the destruction caused by the war.
