PHNOM PENH – Former Prime Minister Hun Sen and Yohei Sasakawa, the chairman of the Nippon Foundation, have agreed to visit Myanmar together soon.

Both made the decision when they met on Oct. 11 at the 7 January Palace, the headquarter of the Cambodian People’s Party.

In the meeting, Sasakawa said Hun Sen, with his experience in leading Cambodia for nearly four decades, was an important actor in helping Myanmar restore normality.

Hun Sen said he still wanted to see Myanmar improving its situation though he was no longer prime minister.

Sasakawa also met Prime Minister Hun Manet and said, “Cambodia is a good role model in leadership with peace and national unity for other countries to follow, as some countries are in conflicts and insecure.”

Hun Manet also showed his support for the joint visit.

Hun Sen, as the chairman of ASEAN 2023, met Myanmar junta chief General Min Aung Hlaing during a two-day official visit to Myanmar in January last year. The former PM was the only ASEAN country leader to do so.

Hun Sen also told the ASEAN leaders that coping with Myanmar’s political conflict required a high degree of patience.
