PHNOM PENH – Military police forces in Preah Vihear province seized 1,020 kilograms of drugs on Jan. 21.

Say Det, deputy commissioner of Preah Vihear provincial police said that the drug was found in a car that had been abandoned.

Authorities have not yet identified the suspect, he said, adding that the case is currently being investigated and police are preparing further proceedings.

This seizure comes against a backdrop of increasing drug production throughout the Mekong region.

The number of drug-related offenders significantly rose in 2023 but the amounts of drugs seized decreased 14.5 percent compared to 2022.

The Anti-drug Department said in a report that 19,940 people were detained in drug-related cases with 2.98 metric tonnes of all kinds of drugs confiscated. Of all the suspected, 499 were foreigners from different 17 nationalities.

The severity of the sentence for drug trafficking depends on the quantity of drugs smuggled. Those found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of drugs can face a lifetime in jail.
