PHNOM PENH – The prahok industry has been urged to expand research to meet the rapidly growing demand for aquaculture products.

Dith Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, urged enterprises and stakeholders on June 29 to focus research on smell processing and value chains for economic efficiency and sustainability.

He advised them to register intellectual property rights and seek international recognition.

The policy must be to establish more markets for the processing of both natural and aquaculture products, he said.

The speed of demand growth meant it was critical to identify fish species that can be processed quickly. The Ministry of Agriculture pledged to support knowledge, technology, policy and media work to advance this process.

Prahok is processed at 182 enterprises to supply domestic demand and for export.

It is considered a traditional food for Cambodians and is important for food security and nutrition, especially in rural areas. The UN Industrial Development Organization says the average Cambodian consumes about 18 grams of prahok a day.

Last year, Cambodia processed about 8900 tonnes of prahok to meet domestic demand and for international markets such as France, the United States and South Korea.
