PHNOM PENH – Prime Minister Hun Sen and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky held a phone conversation on May 29 discussing, for the second time, the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hun Sen underscored the importance of seeking dialogue with means at disposal in order to put an end to the war and bring back welfare to the Ukrainian people.

President Zelensky expressed his gratitude for Cambodia’s continuous support for the country’s sovereignty and stance to end to the war.

Cambodia was one of 143 countries that voted for a resolution to defend the principles of the U.N. Charter on last October against Moscow’s annexation of four Ukrainian regions. Of the world body's 193 members, 35 abstained and five voted against, including Russia, Syria, Nicaragua, North Korea, and Belarus.

The country had also voted twice to support U.N. resolutions condemning the Russian armed invasion of Ukraine since its start.

Zelensky also mentioned the demining assistance provided by Cambodia, in support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, to 15 Ukrainian deminers. He said he is looking forward to continued cooperation in the future.

“I also spoke about the Peace Formula and invited Cambodia to join concrete steps towards its implementation,” Zelensky wrote on his Twitter on May 29.

Ukraine has joined the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), becoming its 50th member and the sixth nation to do so, while Cambodia was hosting the 2022 ASEAN Summits in November last year.

Prime Minister Hun Sen reaffirmed the support for Ukraine’s desire to become an ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner.

Both country leaders had their first phone conversation last November.
